WHY SPACEMATTERS

#whyspacematters - a UNOOSA photography competition in cooperation with NASA and Astronaut Scott Kelly to highlight the role of space for sustainable development.

See the tab above for the winners so far, and click here for other notable entries!

NASA Astronaut Scott Kelly is currently onboard the International Space Station (ISS) on a unique One Year Mission, together with the Russian Cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko. Mr Kelly will be setting a single-mission record for a U.S. astronaut, and the joint expedition will be a great feat for space exploration and a step forward in research on the effects of long-term space habitation for the future of human space flight.

To highlight the role of space-based science and technologies and their applications for sustainable development, UNOOSA, with NASA and Scott Kelly is asking the public to submit photos depicting just why space matters to us all in our daily lives.

We want to know #whyspacematters to you. Take a picture of what space means to you in your daily life, in relation to the themes suggested below and post it on Instagram using #whyspacematters and tagging @UNOOSA. The deadline for submission of photos under a monthly theme is the 10th of each month. Include a caption with a short explanation about the photo.

Send us your pictures through Instagram tagging @unoosa and using #whyspacematters.

Each month a winner will be chosen and announced by Scott Kelly from the International Space Station.

ABOUT UNOOSA and the #YearinSpace

The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) works to promote international cooperation in the peaceful use and exploration of space, and in the utilisation of space science and technology for sustainable economic and social development. The Office assists any United Nations Member States to establish legal and regulatory frameworks to govern space activities and strengthens the capacity of developing countries to use space science technology and applications for development by helping to integrate space capabilities into national development programmes.

NASA Astronaut Scott Kelly is currently onboard the International Space Station on a unique One Year Mission, together with Russian Cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko. Scott Kelly will be setting a single-mission record for a U.S. astronaut. Kelly and Kornienko launched on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan in spring 2015 and will land in Kazakhstan in spring 2016.

The goal of their yearlong expedition aboard the orbiting laboratory is to understand better how the human body reacts and adapts to the harsh environment of space. It will be a great feat for space exploration and will be a step forward in research on the effects of long-term space habitation for the future of human space flight.
