The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) looks for qualified, energetic professionals in a wide range of fields to join us in our efforts to promote international cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space. UNOOSA offers a variety of assignments, including: providing substantive secretariat services to the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) and its subsidiary bodies; providing technical assistance to Member States in matters concerning space science and technology and space law; and organizing training courses, workshops, seminars and other activities involving capacity building and the applications of space science and technology in areas such as basic space science, basic space technology, human space technology, satellite navigation, remote sensing, disaster management communications, tele-health/tele-medicine, and space law.

The following positions are currently available:

Associate Programme Officer (Office of the Director) (Reference: 15-09-P-TEMP)

The position is located within the Office of the Director of UNOOSA in Vienna, Austria. The incumbent works under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer, OD and the overall guidance of the Director of UNOOSA.

Within assigned authority, the Associate Programme Officer will be responsible for contributing to the preparation of various written outputs of the Office, e.g. draft background papers, analytical and briefing notes, and sections of official reports and studies; preparing inputs for publications, draft speeches, statements and presentations for the Director; providing administrative and substantive support to consultative and other meetings, conferences, including identifying and proposed participants, preparation of background documents and presentations, handling logistics, etc; and performing other duties as assigned.

Associate Programme Officer (Space Applications Section) (Reference: 15-10-P-TEMP)

The position is located within the Space Applications Section (SAS), under the direct supervision of the Chief of SAS, and the overall guidance of the Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs.

Within assigned authority, the Associate Programme Officer will be responsible for organizing and conducting capacity-building and sustainable development activities of the Programme on Space Applications; organizing workshops, expert meetings, symposia, training courses, fellowships and other activities to increase the use of space technology applications for the priority thematic areas of the Programme on Space Applications; and other duties as assigned.

Scientific Affairs Officer (Space Technology) (Reference: 15-SCI-UNOV-40009-R-VIENNA(G))

The position is located within the Space Applications Section (SAS), under the direct supervision of the Chief of SAS, and the overall guidance of the Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs.

Within assigned authority, the Scientific Affairs Officer (Space Technology) will be responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating the activities of the Programme on Space Applications in the field of space technology and its applications, including small satellites and global navigations satellite systems; organizing workshops, expert meetings, symposia, training courses, fellowships and other activities to increase the access to and use of space technology applications tools for the priority thematic areas of the Programme; and providing technical advice on the theme, objectives and target groups of the Programme to the host countries and other organizers of the activities.

Internship: Space Policy and Law (Reference: 15-LEG-UNOV-40059-R-VIENNA)

The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs/Committee, Policy and Legal Affairs Section internship is for two months with an opportunity for extension, pending on the needs of the Office. The duties may include, but are not limited to, assistance in drafting and preparing official documents; assistance in preparing travaux preparatoire for the United Nations principles on outer space; and document, legal and internet research.
