MEDUSA - The use of the satellite navigation for freight and road transport

Euromed GNSS II/MEDUSA project (21 October 2014, Amman, Jordan) aims to share experiences and best practices, and to discuss about strategies and possible ways forward in relation to the use of the satellite navigation (Global Navigation Satellite Systems - GNSS), and particularly of the European GNSS (E-GNSS) for freight and road transport in the region.

MEDUSA - Heading the operational adoption of EGNOS in aviation in the Euromed countries

MEDUSA Project Update (Monastir, Tunisia, 4 June 2014)

The delegates of the aviation community from the Euromed countries met in Tunis at the event of MEDUSA, to debate on the use of EGNOS for LPV in their region.

Hosted by GEMCO at the premises of Elgazala Technopark, the event was aimed at presenting the results of the activity carried out by MEDUSA last January, and consisting in the validation of GNSS approaches designed by the project for the airport of Monastir (Tunisia), making use of the EGNOS coverage available in the Northern fringe of the country. Conducted by OACA (Office de l'Aviation Civile et des Aéroports), the Tunisian Air Navigation Service Provider, with the support of European experts (from Telespazio, ENAV, ESSP, Helios, Ineco), this represents the first complete experience for LPV approach procedures validation outside Europe.

The event was opened by the Minister of Transport of Tunisia. At the presence of the European Commission, the Euromed delegates had the opportunity to take stock of the lessons learnt from MEDUSA activities in Tunisia, and to discuss on the way forward.

Through its achievements, MEDUSA is making a breakthrough for the introduction of EGNOS Safety of Life service in North Africa and Middle-East region. Further steps have to be still implemented. However, the results obtained by MEDUSA are useful also for other regions interested to use EGNOS for aviation.

Coordinated by Telespazio, MEDUSA (MEDiterranean follow-Up for EGNOS Adoption) is the Euromed GNSS II project. MEDUSA aims at introducing and exploiting E-GNSS services in the Euromed region, by undertaking a programme of assistance actions to support and prepare the countries for the optimal use and adoption of EGNOS at first and in the perspective of Galileo.
MEDUSA also sets up a long term cooperation and operation structure named GEMCO (Galileo EuroMed Cooperation Office), acting as a point of reference and as an incubator for the successful development of initiatives related to GNSS in the Euromed region.
