#whyspacematters Astronaut Scott Kelly addresses the UN General Assembly at the Sustainable Development Goals Summit

Astronaut spoke from the International Space Station, 25 September

NASA astronaut Scott Kelly addressed the United Nations General Assembly during the 2015 Sustainable Development Summit which took place 25 to 27 September. In a video message that showed Mr. Kelly floating inside the Tranquility node of the International Space Station, he spoke about how beautiful and fragile the Earth appeared from space.

"We don't see any political borders up here like you do on a map; it makes me think that we're all one crew aboard the spaceship earth, flying through the universe. I also think about how fragile the atmosphere looks and how we need to take care of it, and take care of one another"

Throughout Mr. Kelly's talk, ' #whyspacematters', the social media campaign of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), was displayed below. The campaign aims to promote the benefits of space and space technology for sustainable development. #whyspacematters will highlight to the international community the hugely important role that space technologies can play in helping the member states of the United Nations achieve the targets laid out in the Sustainable Development Goals.
