United Nations/Japan Nano-Satellite Symposium

Background

In-follow up to the series of three UN/Austria/ESA Symposiums on Small Satellite Programmes for Sustainable Development, held in Graz, Austria, from 2009 to 2011, the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs will organize International Symposiums on Basic Space Technology Development in the regions that correspond to the United Nations Economic Commissions for Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Western Asia, starting in 2012.

The first Symposium will be hosted by the University of Tokyo, co-hosted by the University Space Engineering Consortium (UNISEC) and held in Nagoya, Japan, in conjunction with the Japan Aerospace 2012. It will include the final presentations of projects submitted to the 2nd Mission Idea Contest, a poster session, discussions on space education related to small satellite development and sessions on the following topics:

  • Session 1: Satellite Architecture and Technologies
  • Session 2: Innovation in Satellite Development Process
  • Session 3: Utilization/Applications of Micro- and Nano-Satellites
  • Session 4: Standardization and Regulatory Issues
  • Session 5: Strategies for Capacity Building

Symposium Report

Application for Funding Support
(Submission Deadline was 1 June 2012 - Applications are no Longer Accepted)

The United Nations, through its Programme on Space Applications, will provide funding support for a limited number of qualified participants. Funding support will cover air travel to/from Japan and/or accommodation and support for living expenses for the duration of the Symposium. Preference will be given to qualified applicants from developing countries. Kindly note that the application procedure follows a 2-step process:

Step 1: All applicants seeking funding support through the United Nations shall first register for the Symposium as an author. All applicants are required to submit an abstract for the Symposium. Applicants whose papers have been accepeted for one of the sessions or for presentation as a poster will be considered on a priority basis, however, since only a limited number of papers can be accepted for presentation at the Symposium, funding support will not be contingent on the acceptance of the paper.

Step 2: Please complete and submit the application form for funding support. We encourage you to use the online form, however, application forms sent by mail to the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, United Nations Office at Vienna, Vienna International Centre, P.O. Box 500, 1400 Vienna, Austria, or - preferably - submitted by email in .pdf format to unpsa@unoosa.org will also be accepted.

Outcome of the Application Selection Process

Selected applicants that will receive funding support by the co-sponsors have now been informed.
If you have not received an invitation letter yet, we regret that funds were not sufficient to provide support to you.

How to go to the Hotel from the Nagoya Airport (Chubu Centrair)

  1. The best way from the Nagoya Airport is to use a train to Nagoya Station. There is a good train service between the Airport and Nagoya Station, taking 30-40 minutes.

UN funded participants will receive a one-time stipend for incidental expenses, including ground-transportation cost. Details about stipend payment will be provided to you at the Symposium.
