UN/Austria Symposium 2023 | Space for Climate Action Training

Synthetic Aperture RADAR (SAR):
Winter-Water-Warming

Training provider: Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and EO-College

Description: This online course offers an introduction to how Canadians research, develop and utilize radar remote sensing technology for mapping and environmental monitoring. All activities are related to CSA supported EO projects. Five brief lessons cover early developments of radar leading to the Canadian RADARSAT program and how Canadian government researchers and managers are currently using satellite radar data in their day-to-day work. The course provides insights regarding Canada's practical needs for, and know-how of, satellite radar when it comes to meeting the challenges of winter, water, and warming in a very large country. The environmental challenges and use of SAR are not entirely unique to Canada, but applicable to the world at large.

This course covers five topics:

  • Canada and RADAR
  • Agriculture
  • Lake and river rice
  • Sea ice
  • Canada's RADARSAT constellation mission

Format: The course is structured as a self-paced Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) with a total duration of approximately 4 hours.

Target audience: Earth Observation practitioners and individuals with an interest to learn about Canada's satellite radar program and its development of environmental applications.

Prerequisites: A basic knowledge of radar remote sensing is desirable. For completing the course with good success, it would be helpful for you to have an understanding of:

  • What are the basics of satellite remote sensing?
  • What are the operating principles of a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system?
  • What are the main applications of imaging radars?

If you do not know these concepts, we recommend to take the 'Echoes in Space' course first. This course will give you a detailed introduction into the basics of radar remote sensing.

Language: English.

Registration: Registration is open. You may start the course at any time. Click here to register.

Certificate: You will receive a certificate of achievement for completing the course.
