"Having this cubeSat in orbit changes everything. 5-6 years ago, this was for us a project without much credibility. Now the question we get is when are we going to deploy another satellite. The project caused a change in attitude among the university students, they do not see these ideas anymore as something illusory or unrealistic as they did before, but rather as something possible." "The same thing is happening on a wider scale in Guatemala" Victor Hugo Ayerdi, co- project coordinator from Universidad del Valle de Guatemala.
"Without any doubt, without KiboCUBE, we would not have been able to put our first satellite in orbit in 2020. We are thankful to UNOOSA, JAXA, and all of the people and institutions who believed in this young group of trailblazers." Luis Zea, co- project coordinator from Universidad del Valle de Guatemala

The first satellite of Guatemala, Quetzal-1 has been deployed from the International Space Station on 29 April 2020 (click  here to watch the deployment from JAXA YouTube)  thanks to KiboCUBE. The initial goal of the team from Universidad del Valle de Guatemala was to design, develop, and operate a CubeSat-class satellite to test a multispectral sensor prototype, opening the field of space science & technology in Guatemala, developing the country's human capital, and enabling the independent acquisition of multispectral remote sensing data for natural resource management. Quetzal-1 was deployed in orbit on 28 April 2020.
