On 5 March 2026, the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space decided, by written procedure, that the sixty-fifth session of its Legal Subcommittee would be held from 15 to 22 April 2026, and that two days immediately preceding the session, on 13 and 14 April 2026, as well as two days immediately following the session, on 23 and 24 April 2026, would be dedicated to informal meetings and informal consultations to be held by the working groups of the Subcommittee, by the Action Team on Lunar Activities Consultation of the Committee, and for any matters that require such meetings and consultations, and to any side events to be organized in conjunction with the session. The Committee further decided that the following measures should be implemented to convene the sixty-fifth session of the Subcommittee:
These arrangements apply exclusively to the sixty-fifth session of the Legal Subcommittee as an exceptional measure and do not prejudge the outcome of the intersessional, informal consultations to be held by the Working Group of the Whole of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee on measures to address the effects of the liquidity crisis and to improve the organization and the work of the Committee and its subcommittees, under the guidance of the rules of procedure of the General Assembly as it applies to the Committee (A/AC.105/1346, annex I, paras. 5 and 8).

The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, in its capacity as secretariat of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and its subcommittees, invited Permanent Missions of all States Members of the United Nations and organizations having permanent observer status with the Committee to a briefing in preparations for the forthcoming sixty-fifth session of the Legal Subcommittee, scheduled to be held in Vienna in April 2026.
The hybrid briefing was held on Tuesday, 31 March 2026, from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. (Vienna time) in Conference room CR-3 at the Vienna International Centre (VIC) [Ref: OOSA/2026/16 of 23 February 2026].
