Inter-Agency Meeting on Outer Space Activities:
2022, Forty-first session

7-9 December 2022, Bangkok

1. Introduction 

The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) is pleased to announce that the forty-first session of the United Nations Inter-Agency Meeting on Outer Space Activities (UN-Space) is scheduled to be held in December 2022, and would like to use this opportunity to encourage entities of the United Nations system, in line with General Assembly resolution 76/76 of 9 December 2021 (A/RES/76/76), to participate, as appropriate, in UN-Space coordination efforts. 

The UN-Space event will be co-organized with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in Bangkok, Thailand, with the active support of the Information and Communications Technology and Disaster Risk Reduction Division (IDD) of ESCAP. 

Joint UN-Space - High Level Panel on Space-based Technologies for Disaster Risk Reduction 

A Joint UN-Space - High Level Panel on Space-based Technologies for Disaster Risk Reduction with participation of Member States is planned to be organized in the morning of  9 December 2022 as an integral part of the United Nations Workshop on Space-based Technologies for Disaster Risk Reduction - Assessing the Unseen Risks, scheduled to be held from 7 to 9 December 2022 at the United Nations Conference Centre (UNCC) of ESCAP. 

UNOOSA, in its capacity as UN-Space Secretariat, and IDD of ESCAP as the host, are pleased to invite representatives of United Nations entities  to contribute to the discussion panel, as speakers , and demonstrate examples of current and potential activities undertaken by their respective organizations relating to the use of space technology, science and applications and/or relevant regulatory frameworks for disaster risk reduction and dealing with unseen risks, sharing best practices and for showcasing space-related activities in support of disaster management.  

ESCAP is working with its members and associate members to implement the Asia-Pacific Plan of Action on Space Applications for Sustainable Development (2018 - 2030), through augmenting digital innovations and integrating geospatial information. It will contribute to the "Space2030" Agenda formulated by the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.

41 st session of the United Nations Inter-Agency Meeting on Outer Space Activities (UN-Space) 

dedicated meeting of UN-Space (open to the participation of United Nations entities only), hosted by ESCAP, will be held in parallel with the Conference. The meeting will include orientation on the latest developments in the peaceful uses of outer space, and discuss the preparation of the upcoming Report of the Secretary-General on the coordination of space-related activities within the United Nations system. A provisional agenda for the 41st session of UN-Space (scheduled to be held during lunchtime on  6 and 7 December 2022) is enclosed. 

Background to the Inter-Agency Meeting 

The Inter-Agency Meeting is a mechanism set up in mid-1970s to promote collaboration, synergy, exchange of information and coordination of plans and programmes of United Nations entities (departments, offices, funds, programmes and specialized agencies) in the implementation of activities involving the use of space technology and its applications. In December 2013, the General Assembly, in its resolution 68/75, recommended that the Inter-Agency Meeting on Outer Space Activities be referred to as "UN-Space". The Office for Outer Space Affairs leads UN-Space and acts as its secretariat.  

Substantive items on the agenda of the fortieth session will include (a) update on the "Space2030" agenda; (b) preparation of the report of the Secretary-General on the coordination of space-related activities within the United Nations system; (c) special report by UN-Space on initiatives and applications for space-related inter-agency cooperation; (d) coordination of future plans and programmes of common interest for cooperation and exchange of views on current activities in the practical application of space technology and related areas; and (e) organization of open session.
